It’s 38 degrees and drizzling outside! But somebody saw some sleet 50 miles north of here so REPENT OF YOUR SINS AND PLEASE LINE UP FOR CARPOOL TO THE LEFT OF THE SIGN.

Yes, we Southerners have had our share of legitimate panics — which, ironically, were not very well predicted by authorities.

Let me clue people in on something: Unless the ground has been at freezing temps for several hours or more, it just won’t stick. Dirt, asphalt, and sidewalks tend to hold the heat for a long time. So if it’s 50 degrees in the morning and the snow starts to fall in the afternoon, even if temps approach 32, only the bridges even have a chance of being affected quickly.

On the other hand, you have January 2013 — the ground (and air) were below freezing for days. When in snowed, it stayed. And we acted like we never saw it coming.

(Side note: My parents and brother all live west of Baltimore and are preparing to go nowhere in particular for about a week...I’m just hoping for a little slush so I can have some fun with my AWD wagon in a parking lot on the way home today.)

I’m so jealous. I live too far NW to be hit by this snow storm. I want some fucking snow.

Yep, the joys of living on the south. Last night we had tornado warnings in Mississippi. Now it is 37 with a wind chill of 28. Fun times I tell ya.

Update: Snow has been falling for almost 3 hours!

I think some of the flakes are taking more than a couple seconds to melt.

My son is on the back porch making the saddest snowballs of all time.

*sigh*

I think my district was the only one NOT to close early in the Birmingham Metro.
